I’m not a huge fan of jewelry aside from the odd button or dangly skull on a lapel but jewelry does catch my eye. Maybe because out of everything, it has the least funcionality. It’s the only thing we wear that isn’t completely necessary so I’m constantly curious about people’s jewelry choices since I think it says a lot about their personality.

I recently saw this interesting chunky ring on this guy and decided to find out what it was all about.

S: What do you Greg?
G: Graphic design.
S: Ah, I can see that in your ring for some reason. Where did you get it?
G: I bought this ring in Cordoba, Spain. I don’t usually wear jewelry. I bought it on impulse.
S: It looks custom made. What does the design mean?

G: I am not quite sure if the design represents a single idea but the aesthetic is a nice blend between handsome conservatism and contemporary boldness.
S: Whoa.
G: Much like the city of Cordoba.
S: What do you think about jewelry in general? I notice there’s nothing else on you.
G: I think jewelry should suit the person. Some people look overdone or even uncomfortable when wearing too much of it. I am not a fan of those men who obviously look ornamented by their girlfriends.
S: I agree. Sometimes it can be extremely tacky. What is a rule people should follow when making jewelry choices?
G: Don’t just wear it ’cause someone told you it’s gonna make you a better person.

I couldn’t help but stare at this dress. The print is just fun and youthful. It also doesn’t make a lot of sense. I just had to inquire…

S: Okay, I have to ask: what’s going on with this dress?
J: It’s parrots! On a pair of yenta glasses! I imagine the parrots talking to each another. “Hey, what’s up man?” “Ah, not much. Just chillin’ out here… ON THIS PAIR OF GLASSES!” “Oh shiiii! ME TOO.” *parrot high-fiving ensues*
S: And where does one find a dress like this?
J: I got it at Katie on Yonge Street. I didn’t even hesitate. I just grabbed it off the rack and bought it without trying it on. I do that a lot. Sometimes I’m successful, sometimes epic failure results.
S: I think this was a successful buy. Where do you like to shop?
J: I like thrift shops, shitty teenager stores and eclectic boutiques. Prices and brand names are pretty much irrelevant as soon as the tag comes off. If it’s got that spark that appeals to you, grab it. It doesn’t matter where it came from. I’m pretty sure this was manufactured in a sweatshop. I should feel bad for working some poor 4 year-old with needles for fingers. But hey, if I didn’t buy it, someone else would have. Right?
S: I’m not answering that… Is this print indicative of your personal style?
J: I’m like a prim lady crossed with a hippie crossed with a weird hipster. As long as I’m comfortable and I don’t feel like I look like an asshole, I’ll leave the house.
S: Can you wear stuff like this at work?
J: I’m an Executive Assistant at a real estate investment company. My weekday clothes are very, very boring. But I try to keep things on the chic side rather than office frumptastic.
S: Tell me about the chain? It looks great.
J: The gold necklace is from Forever 21. It used to have a third chain with a massive gold locket on it but I felt like Flavor Flave. As soon as I cut it off, it was like a fashion miracle. I now wear that necklace all the freaking time. It goes with everything.
S: This outfit seems more party than business, I think.
J: I wore the parrot dress the first time to a screening of The Room at the Royal. I wore it again last weekend in Montreal and ended up at a strip club so I guess it’s pretty versatile.

It has been super hard to find people who are completely decked out from head to toe. I’ll have to wait till the weather gets a little colder (god, I hate even saying that) because people might start bringing out more pieces. Right now, it’s a lot of sneakers and shorts. Even I’m not trying. Comfort seems to be key these days. So I find myself zeroing in on specific details about people around me.

I did notice this lovely bag on a patio this week.
S: Lovely bag.
A: Thanks! I like it.
S: Where did you get?
A: It’s from Barcelona.
S: Whoa, look at those cigarettes!
cigs
A: I know! They’re crazy!
S: Anyway, the bag is very pretty. Not flashy but sophisticated.
A: Durable. I’m surprised it hasn’t deteriorated at all.
S: I really like the supple leather.
A: I get a lot of comments about it.
S: Oh good. I’m drunk so I’m going to have to check this photo when I get home to make sure I actually like it.

And I still do! Super chic.
